The Ohio Red Ribbon Celebration is a time set aside annually
from October 20-31 to increase awareness about the negative
effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and promote safe
and drug free environments for everyone. The Celebration serves
as a tool for involving all aspects of the community in the process
of prevention.

The Celebration is recognized as Ohio's largest prevention
activity supporting drug free lifestyles. Ohio Parents for
Drug Free Youth is the statewide coordinator of the Ohio Red
Ribbon Celebration. Last year, 349,270 persons participated in
Red Ribbon activities and 19,178 Ohioans pledged their support
for drug free lifestyles.

The Celebration originated to honor the work and memory of Drug
Enforcement Agent Enrique Camarena who was murdered by drug traffickers
in 1985. The first Ohio Red Ribbon Celebration took place in
1988. The celebration has become the annual catalyst regarding
no tolerance for drugs in our schools, work places and
communities.

The Red Ribbon symbolizes a commitment to healthy drug free
lifestyles, "no use of illegal drugs and no illegal
use of legal drugs." When you wear a Red Ribbon, you symbolize
your personal commitment to a healthy, drug free lifestyle.

Honorary Chairs for the Ohio Red Ribbon Celebration include:
Governor Bob Taft and First Lady Hope Taft; Ohio Department of
Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Director Luceille Fleming;
Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Susan Tave Zelman.

This event provides an opportunity to re-examine what is happening
in our families, our schools and our communities as well as explore
what concerned citizens can do. This year special emphasis is
on community service and the importance of youth serving
their community.
