Ten things you can do to help create a healthy Perrysburg
1. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER; LEARN ALL YOU CAN! Learn about developmental assets and how they provide protection for youth against high risk behaviors. PASA has alcohol, tobacco, and other drug resources. Contact the office if you need information to talk with children or other loved ones.
2. SET A RESPONSIBLE EXAMPLE Your use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs, as well as over the counter medications, role models for your children. Tobacco kills over 425,000 people each year. Alcohol kills over 100,000. did you know that alcohol is a key factor in 33% of suicides, 41% of traffic fatalities, 50% of head injuries, 50% of homicides, 62% of assaults, and 68% of manslaughters? Besides human costs, alcohol-related problems are economically draining -- about $100 billion in 1995. And the cost is rising. These problems strain community resources such as fire, police, ambulance, and emergency departments, as well as thecourt system.
3. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL All children need guidance and support in making healthy choices. Teach children that saying "no" is okay. True friendships mean being accepted even if one chooses not to do what others do.
4. KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS Communicate openly with others in our community in order to provide a clear, consistent message to our youth regarding no use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
5. GET INVOLVED Join PASA or start a block watch program to help your neighborhood control crime and violence, and prevent youth substance abuse.
6. SUPPORT PREVENTION PARTNERS OF WOOD COUNTY The African proverb says, "It takes a village to raise a child." Volunteering is one way to let young people know you care.
7. PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE APPROPRIATE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Examine the activities and conditions that jeopardize the health and safety of young people. Work to make the changes necessary to provide a healthy and safe Perrysburg for youth.
8. VOTE!! By electing community leaders that understand and support policies that promote healthy and safe communities, we lay a foundation for a better tomorrow for our children.
9. KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY RESOURCES Parents and others may do all they can to raise healthy youth and still find themselves having problems with substance abuse or other high risk behaviors. There are a number of local services that can help families prevent or overcome problems. Click Call for Help.
